Water resources Kenya has a tropical climate with about 80 per cent of the land classified as arid or semi-arid. Rainfall averages 630 mm/year, ranging from less than 200 mm in the north to 1,800 mm on the slopes of Mount Kenya (AMCOW 2018; FAO 2016). The country’s aqueduct water stress for all sectors measured in 2010 was 0.76 and is projected to decrease to 0.64 by 2040 (Luo et al. 2015). A score of 0.64 indicates that there is low competition among water users relative to available surface- water resources. Water withdrawals as a proportion of total withdrawals are highest in the agriculture sector, averaging 59 per cent (AMCOW 2018).
