In DRC, participatory mapping was initiated by civil society organizations in reaction to vast, centralized land allocation processes threatening local communities and indigenous peoples' customary land rights. Partici- patory mapping proved to be a very adequate tool,

enabling the communities to identify their rights and claim them. RFN and partners have been cooperating since 2006, improving mapping technology, implement- ing it in various contexts, including in the Itombwe forest reserve.
