Recommendations

• Improve national implementation of the Environmental Management Act and other regulations that have a bearing on environmental management. • Continue to strengthen the co-ordination between agencies mandated to protect the environment. • Implement more programmes to supplement government efforts to ensure environmental management. • Implement infrastructure development programmes for the provision of basic social services. • Reduce dependence on natural resource, particularly on woodfuel, by developing renewable energy technologies. • Identify priority sectors and technologies needed to integrate climate change adaptation measures into development policies. • Improve the institutional and legal framework for the mining sector and monitor and enforce such laws through Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental Management Plans and Audits. • Improve the provision of basic social services particularly in rapidly growing urban areas.

• Invest in infrastructure to improve water supply and sanitation.

• Strongly enforce legislation in order to safeguard protected areas, natural heritage sites and wetlands.

• Create and enforce deterrent penalties against bushfires.

• Raise awareness about environmental issues through regular education and information dissemination activities.

• Continuously develop the capacity of institutions mandated to protect the

environment and natural resources such as the Zambia Environmental Management Agency, Forestry and Fisheries Department, and Zambia Wildlife Authority .

• Make sustainable land use practices central to agriculture, mining, forestry and wildlife.

• Bring the spread of invasive alien species under control in order to protect the country’s biodiversity, food security, health and economic development.

• Strengthen tree-planting programmes especially in areas affected by charcoal production and timber harvesting.

• Implement measures to promote sustainable farming practices.

• Increase community participation in managing natural resources in order to raise awareness about the importance of the environment.
