Like Lake Bunyonyi, Lake Mutanda was formed due to river valley drowning and lava damming on the arena-like Kisoro plain; but the valley was not so deep in comparison with the case of Lake Bunyonyi, and hence, the resulting lake is not so deep. The lake covers 22 km 2 in area, with an average depth of 22 m. The lake shore line is more regular and shorter compared to Lake Bunyoyi, with a circumference of only 60 km. The shallow nature of the lake puts it at a higher risk of demise through rapid silting compared to the deeper Lake
