It is not unusual to find that the rural poor in least developed countries do not purchase solid fuels – they collect them from available resources. While

traditional fuel such as wood, agricultural residues and dung can be gathered locally considerable time can be spent collecting fuel. This limits time available to engage in income-generating activities or, in the case of children, to focus on education. Since women and children are often primarily responsible for fuel collection, this places them at greater risk of injury or gender-based violence.

For these reasons, the degree to which women are able to participate in the labour market is very much associated with transition to other modern fuel sources especially because there is less time to collect and use solid fuel. In addition, overall household energy use is reduced because less time is spent at home. 12 Household income is also an important factor in the transition to modern energy sources, though it is
