Annex 2: Objectives of gender mainstreaming in the waste sector

Target areas

Result-oriented and gender-responsive approach

Household waste generation

Men and women receive information and training on household recycling, reusing materials and composting. Men and women receive information, tools and education on waste separation for recycling. Men and women receive information, tools and education on waste minimization. Men and women receive information on the value of waste and are encouraged to increase their recycling. Men and women receive information and training on waste hazards.

Formal waste management

Equal representation and roles of men and women are secured. Equal opportunities for jobs and equal compensation are secured.

Men and women have equal social benefits. Men and women have equal safety precautions.

Informal waste management

Men and women have equal opportunities when the informal sector becomes formalized. Men and women have equal safety precautions. Compensation is distributed equally. Men and women are equally involved in community efforts. Gender equality is enacted at national and/or municipality levels. Gender capacity-building and training is provided at all levels. Research and data collection capture the contributions of women and men in the informal and formal sectors. Operations and stakeholder communications address possible gender- differentiated needs. Community decision-making about waste disposal takes into account gender inequalities and seeks to ensure that women have equal participation in processes. Stakeholders in the design and management of municipal waste services are informed about gender issues, including women’s specific needs.
