GRID-Arendal: 30 Years of Making a Difference

GRID-Arendal organized four side events at the Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (BC COP-14) that was held back to back with the Ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention (RC COP-9) and the Ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention (SC COP-9) from 29 April–10 May in Geneva. The theme of the meetings was Clean Planet, Healthy People: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste . GRID-Arendal presented two publications, Controlling Transboundary Trade in Plastic Waste and Pocket Guide to the BRS Gender Action Plan: Integrating a gender perspective in the sound management of chemicals and waste . During the Fourth Session of the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi (UNEA-4) in March, Arendal organized two side events on behalf of the Norwegian Government focusing on governance arrangements and financing towards combating marine litter. The Governance side event was hosted by the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Ola Elvestuen, who was elected president of the next Assembly to be held in 2021. The financing event was hosted by the State Secretary of International Development, Aksel Jakobsen. Both events counted with the participation of high level speakers and experts and were very well attended. The UNEP / GRID-Arendal report Global linkages – a graphic look at the changingArctic: AVital Arctic Graphics Report was released as part of the GEO6 series at UNEA-4, and at the Arctic Ministerial meeting in Rovaniemi. In Rovaniemi, the exhibition related to the same report was also inaugurated during the farewell reception of the Finnish Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.
